Kriya Yoga (Self-Realization Fellowship)

photo-kriya
Brief Description:
Paramahansa Yogananda, who wrote the pivotal Kriya text, Autobiography of a Yogi, introduced the practice to the west and founded the Self-Realization foundation. It proposes that our natural condition is ‘pure awareness’ or ‘Self-awareness’ and mandates laws of general conduct: harmlessness, truthfulness, non-stealing, cleanliness, purity and health. Kriya Yoga is a comprehensive system that utilizes a broad range of techniques. Life-force control in Kriya differs from traditional Pranayama practices, in that its aim for the breath is to magnetize the spine and direct the energy flow or transfer. While traditional pranayama aims to increase the retention of the breath. The Seeker is taught the proper use of Kriya pranayama. The energy transfer is thought to transform the way we think and function. Practitioners advance through the technique to higher Kriya and achieve full self-realization with the use of mantras like So-ham, Ham-sa, Hong-so, and OM. 15 minutes of Hatha yoga is sometimes done prior to meditation.
