Zen Meditation

Brief Description:
Originating in China and exported to Japan, Zazen Meditation is at the heart of Zen Buddhism. The aim is to realize ones true nature by calming the body and mind and gain insight into the true nature of being thereby achieving enlightenment. There are three different techniques or stages of mediation: Concentration, Koan Introspection, Shikantaza (just sitting) and two distinct schools use a particular combination of these techniques. In Koan Introspection, the practitioner focuses on a koan, an unsolvable intellectual conundrum, as an object of mediation. Shikantaza is an objectionless mediation where the practitioner uses concentration to be in the present moment. The Concentration technique, used in both schools, is the practice of counting the breath – though there are variations in this technique – the meditator counts the breath until a one-pointedness is built up called joriki. There are five important and traditional seated postures, a chair is optional, and sometimes mantra is used for beginners.
